Chapter 20
Smith checked the clip before slamming it home and making sure that the safety was still on. He slid the pistol into the holster that hung over his ribcage, and then put on his jacket. The jacket was cut specially for the purpose of concealment, and the gun was no more than a slight bulge that most people would never notice at all unless they knew what they were looking for. Smith picked up the piece of paper with Greg Breyer’s address on it and put in his pocket, then turned off the light and left the motel room, making sure to lock up after himself.
In the car he laid out his map; the route from the E-Z Sleep to Greg’s home was marked out in red pen. A GPS device would have been much easier, but Smith never used one while on a job; anything by which your movements could later be tracked or traced was dangerous to someone in his profession, an unnecessary risk.
He drove through the darkening night, his path guided by streetlamps that stood glaring down on him like watchful sentinels, as if they were aware of the work he was up to and did not approve. In twenty minutes he was on Hazelnut Dr., and he followed the road past a row of small houses until he found 4236. It was a compact house that looked ill kept and in dire need of repairs, with a broken window, a screen door hanging half off its hinges, and a drainpipe that looked like it had been knocked askew. There were no lights on in the house, and the open carport was empty.
Smith drove farther up the block before making a U-turn; he parked at the curb. He shut off the engine and waited. Thirty minutes passed; then an hour. He thought about calling the whole thing off and keeping his promise to Shirley, but he found that he just couldn’t do it.
Finally, a little after eleven o’clock Smith saw a car making its slow, lazy way up the street. The car pulled into the driveway at 4236, but took the turn too fast and drove over the yard a ways before turning sharply back onto the paved driveway and coming to rest crookedly beneath the carport.
Smith got ready to move, his hand gripping the door handle. The car at 4236 stood silent, and in the shadow of the carport Smith could make out no movement from within the vehicle. Three minutes passed, and Smith didn’t know what to make of the situation. Suddenly the car reversed quickly and pulled back out into the street, where it stopped for a moment before moving forward, away from Smith. Smith turned the engine back on, shifted into drive and followed after it.
He wondered briefly if the driver of the other car had noticed him waiting up the block and was trying to make a getaway, but the other vehicle made no evasive maneuvers, keeping a steady pace, so that idea was ruled out.
